Background

Formed in response to the devastating fires of 2008 in Santa Cruz County, the Soquel FireSafe Council is a partnership of concerned residents and local agencies with a mission to mobilize homeowners and residents in the Wildalnd Urban Interface (WUI) areas of Soquel and its surrounding communities, to help protect their homes and communities from wildfires. We cover the southern portion of Santa Cruz County, from highway 17 to the Monterey County border.

The 2008 Summit, Martin and Trabing fires burned over 5,380 acres, destroyed 218 structures and cost taxpayers over $22.8 million dollars to suppress. Our proactive programs will greatly reduce the level of devastation when a wildfire strikes our community. The Soquel FireSafe Council's participants include CAL FIRE, Central Fire Protection District, Aptos-LaSelva Fire Protection District, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Redwood Empire, State Farm Insurance, local business owners and homeowners.

The Soquel FireSafe Council operates with an elected board of officers and directors consisting of residents from Soquel and Aptos as well as key stakeholders from local, state and federal agencies. We are all volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us.
